This year I’ve become fascinated with my family tree. Just got back my DNA kit results. (Yes, there are privacy issues. I’m ignoring those for now.) So far it reveals just about what I expected. Still amazing.

I feel like I’m in the minority with the privacy issues related to DNA kits. I find the information valuable and fun. Sometimes that is enough.

@manton I did one of these a while back, and it matched the family lore more closely than I expected. The only surprise was a bit more Nordic influence than expected.

@mindofaaronw Definitely valuable and fun. I understand how someone might be concerned about DNA data sitting in a database somewhere, though. For me the trade-off is worth it.

it’s fascinating. I did mine a few years ago. Did 3 different DNA tests to compare geographic results. We have way more Irish that we were led to believe growing up. It’s helped me confirm my Ancestry dot come research. Have 1 branch of family going back to 1100s.

I did mine a few years ago. I grew up being told I was Native American. My family is from Oklahoma for generations. But it was an Elizabeth Warren situation. I was 1% Nigerian and 99% British.

I did one of those about a year ago! I knew there were privacy issues, too, but my partner ordered the kit without giving me a heads-up so I figured I might as well rather than waste it, lol. My results were pretty much exactly what I expected, too. My partner was really disappointed with his because they didn’t break them down any further than “South Indian” and “North Indian” 😕
