Eugen Rochko and team are fighting spammers at mastodon.social:
We’re aware of the spam attack hitting mastodon.social right now and our full moderation and DevOps teams are on the case mitigating any way we can (incl. switching to approval-mode registrations)
Haven’t seen this affect Micro.blog yet, but if anyone notices any unwanted @-mentions or other problems, let us know.
Update: Spoke too soon, definitely hitting us too. 🙁
josh ledgard @manton seems like they could just ban the word crypto and solve two problems. :)
Sam :verified: @manton I think it's pretty confined to Mastodon instances, haven't seen any reports from non-masto instances yet. Seems like they're using Mastodon's hashtag search.
Rene van Belzen @sam which would be a reason enough to restrict hashtag search or do away with it altogether
Manton Reece @renevanbelzen @sam Yep. This is why I've never supported hashtags for discovery in Micro.blog. It's too easy to find random people by topic and target them with harassment, spam, whatever.
kim e landwehr @sam I woke up to the crypto spam this morning on my account on @sleepybunny@sleepybunny@mstdn.social. Hopefully, they will find a solution to this, because if they don't it is only going to get worse
Ryan Laxton seeing it ramping up in XMMP channels too
Pratik Ah! That explains emails blowing up in my Mastodon moderator inbox. So many reports. But glad people are reporting them.
skoo.bz This actually helps with my Micro.blog Masto instance. I never use hashtags when posting from here.
