Ever since I read that Bluesky has about 1.9 million folks on the waiting list, I’ve been thinking about what happens as more invites roll out. By comparison: Mastodon has over 7 million users, with 1 million on a single server. Plus a bunch more across the non-Mastodon fediverse.

Ryan Laxton

Anybody know where to get an invite? I am curious about it.

Manton Reece

@rlaxton No, they only give accounts an extra invite every couple weeks. Although I think they are working through the waiting list.

@manton It saddens me to see smart people like AOC happily jumping to support yet another centralized platform run by the guy who gave us the current centralized platform shit-show. 🙁

Manton Reece

@donm @mcg I think some people wanted an even closer Twitter clone in terms of user experience. But it’s only temporarily centralized. The protocol will support federation.

Don Meyer

@manton @mcg “Temporarily Centralized” is the name of my new band. 😁

Manton Reece

@donm 😂

Jari Pennanen

@manton I hope you guys (micro.blog) get first in line to federate with Bluesky. I definitely want to hear what parts you plan to implement, will you attempt BGS? Can we fetch content from PDSs without the BGS? So on... I suspect implementing own hosted PDS is easiest for single hosters, but if we must fetch everything from BGS it could be problematic.

Manton Reece

@Ciantic I have no idea yet! Too early. But I'm definitely watching it closely.

Watts Martin

I'm curious if Bluesky will really go the way they planned it to; it seems an awful lot of its initial users like it precisely because they don't have to think about federation to use it.
