Really good episode of Dithering this morning on Bluesky vs. Mastodon. As convenient as it would be to have a single decentralized protocol “win”, I want to be ready for a future with multiple successful web-friendly platforms.

I think that should be the aim for everyone otherwise we will recreate the current silo’d networks with the only difference being the technology behind them is “open”.

Personally, I love that fact that Micro.Blog can be my home base, but I can follow a few people on Mastodon that I used to follow on Twitter.

@petar I’m not aware of any problems. You can use your email address or Bluesky username (your domain name or username.bsky.social). It’s also possible to set app passwords in Bluesky, though not required.

@petar Ah, I could assume bsky.social if nothing is there. I’ll make that change for later.

@mikehaynes Yes, I have been struggling to understand this mentality? We all have different needs and wants. Let’s share technologies, and have platforms that fit the needs of different people. I’d like to leave aside the numbers game. Let’s be cooperative and supportive.

@crossingthethreshold @mikehaynes Imagine you are investing in the future of social media. What company do you put your money into to make big bucks? I suspect this is where the impulse to find the One True solution comes from.
It is wrongheaded and deeply toxic.

@fgtech I agree. Funding is needed; investing…maybe not at that level. Protocol crystallization through iterative real world use yields the playing field in which profits can be reaped. Where would we be now if HTML was a proprietary format like .DOC?
You can visit my website at winnet://user.key/account, unless you are on AtariSPider://…
[ edit:yeah, I know formats and protocols are different things, I’m working with rented brain… ]
