I’d love to see Mastodon adopt some variation of NIP-5 so that single-user instance usernames can be collapsed to just the @-domain name. I would support this in Micro.blog too (and maybe should just do it).

would that imply that those with custom domains on MB would then appear as the domain part? Or are your thoughts more only for post coming in from mastodon?

@manton So, say google had just one account, they'd be @ google. com , but otherwise it's foo@ google.com et al? Big opportunities for brands in that, just "being the domain" is basically verification, if Ietter spoofling can be avoided.

@tadpol It would be a preference in Micro.blog. That way it could be enabled for personal domain names but not shared domain names (like a family blog or company site) where it wouldn’t totally fit.

@manton ooh, I like the _@root.domain -> @root.domain translation, pretty simple. Just that part seems like something that could be done now in clients as a convention while keeping the server code the same and changing single user usernames to “_”

Manton Reece

@jesseplusplus Totally. It doesn’t seem like it would require any ActivityPub changes. So it could be rolled out without breaking anything as servers have time to update.

@manton I think thats a great idea and as someone who uses a single instance domain I would def utilize it

@liaizon Yes, and having a custom domain, I too would definitely prefer it.

@manton I like that too… especially because my single user instance has the exact same repeat as yours.

BK Ryer

…prefer the option I should have said…

@manton That’s pretty great! 🙌🏻 Hope to see it around the fediverse soon!
