Jean posted today about how Discover in Micro.blog will be less likely to include photos that don’t have alt text. Just an extra nudge to encourage more people to make their photos accessible.

@manton I wonder when AI will be able to describe pictures to blind people in a somewhat accurate way.

@jeena Soon. We were actually just talking about this. I’d like to add AI-generated captions (clearly labelled as such) as a fallback when someone doesn’t include their own text. Costs may need to come down a little first.

@letters For sure. Anything with AI at this point is just an idea, not fully thought out yet.

@HabibCham Hopefully not an unskippable popup, but rather the occasional reminder on the side. Habits grow slowly, never by force.

@renevanbelzen @HabibCham Yes, I’m also conscious of not adding more friction to posting. That’s why we’re starting with just encouraging people to add text (in blog posts like this) but not forcing it.

is there a way to do this on mobile or in Gluon? I’ve never thought about it, but I suspect every photo I’ve ever posted has been through the two mobile apps and have no clue how I would do so when posting that way.

@lukemperez Yes, in mobile on the web or in the official iOS app, tap on a photo when it’s attached to set the accessibility text.

@lukemperez Thanks for asking/answering this question! I’ve been using the mobile app for a few years now and never knew this feature was there 😆

@mejh I consider that a bug that alt text can’t be added from the share sheet. We’ll look into that.
