I still believe we should welcome Threads to the fediverse, but the news that ActivityPub seems far off has soured my experience posting manually to Threads from my microblog. They grew too big, too quickly. Meanwhile, sounds like Tumblr’s ActivityPub effort has also stalled.

@manton Yeah, likely too large effort when Tumblr has so massive amount of content in their systems. Probably the complexity of extending existing SaaS platform has taken more resources than expected.
Leadership at Automattic wants to support open standards, but question is how much it would cost at that scale (federation of massive amounts of image content etc.).

@manton I don’t doubt the technical complexity of implementing ActivityPub, especially at the scale of 100s of millions of users, but part of me wonders if claiming support was just a useful marketing strategy, for all who promised it.

@manton I haven’t mentioned this publicly but I was contacted by Tumblr’s CTO to help with Indieweb/ActivityPub integration. We agreed on terms. Then they ghosted the project. From what I can tell even the internal team members couldn’t get answers. They totally wasted my time.

@manton Threads is already dead to me when there are no desktop Apps, and particularly no Web App.

@paulrobertlloyd @manton I don't trust Meta any farther than I can see them... and I don't even trust them that far actually

@paulrobertlloyd It sounded like Adam Mosseri was sincere about supporting it. But there's wanting to do something and actually making it a top priority.

@cdevroe Wow, I'm sorry to hear that. I wonder why the effort fizzled out. Hopefully they can reboot it.

@manton I believe at the time it was being pushed forward as "a side project". I think now it would only make sense if it was a main push of the entire team. So that may have been the shift. However, it could have been communicated. I certainly would have understood. The social web landscape has changed dramatically over the last 24 months.

@manton That being said, it would have been really cool to work a little on Tumblr. I think it is still such a cool service.

@manton to be fair it was probably pushed out early to capitalize on the latest twitter debacle.

@paulrobertlloyd @manton This was an easy prediction, but still:

@jgarber Well, it's a little early for "never"... 🙂 I expect they will still launch it eventually, probably when they open up to the EU.

@manton Can an executive at Facebook ever be sincere? Sort of goes against the job description.
