Thinking about ActivityPub made me wonder what Tumblr has been working on, so I clicked around over there for a bit. I missed that Tumblr has live video now, with tipping in “diamonds”? Seems a little out of place with the rest of the platform.

It was really weird the first time I saw it. And then it went away for a month - likely a beta test. But now it's back and I agree, it feels very much at odds with the rest of the platform.

@iChris It also seems like a content moderation nightmare, so I'm surprised Tumblr is taking this on (even if partnering with someone to run it) when they talk about burning through money.

@manton It looks like Tumblr (Automattic Inc.) is trying to compete with TikTok (ByteDance) and Twitch (Amazon), as both the features and screenshots look rather similar to those.

Probably also trying to compete with YouTube (Google) live streaming, but it is kind of odd how many different directions Tumblr is going towards.

from what I see the user base saying, it’s basically a white labeled service that they’re probably getting a cut of.

Chris Enns

I guess maybe they look at the micro transactions on Twitch, Tiktok, or YouTube and think it's easy money? I really don't get it.

@manton all that video stuff appeared in OKCupid for a few months too, then they removed it. It’s a separate app (meetme? Something like that) trying to spread by partnering onto other apps. Surprised Tumblr hasn’t ditched it yet. I never gave up on Tumblr but this (and the lowest-of-the-low advertising) is pushing me away hard.

@manton People dunk on Threads, but Tumblr promised ActivityPub how long ago?

Manton Reece

@yury_mol Yes, we were talking about this on @coreint too… Seems likely that Threads will ship ActivityPub before Tumblr.
