This is how Amazon always wins… I want to pick up an organizing storage-type thing and think IKEA would be perfect. But it’s a bit of a drive, so I check Target and they have basically the same thing. But then I realize Amazon also has something similar that can be here tomorrow for zero effort.

@manton Say what you will about Amazon’s business practices, but a large part of how they got where they are is because they provide genuine convenience relative to the competition.

For an introverted homebody like myself it has been a real improvement.

@manton And it’s led to a ridiculous shortage of diversity in the marketplace that we never really talk about. Most young people have no idea that we once had many of alternatives for most products. Now we have mostly what Amazon moves the largest volume of. It’s been ruinous, and getting worse by the day.

@manton post pandemic Amazon has declined enough (shipping speed, cost/quality) that I would totally use other options if they provided curated, quality, guaranteed products with decent shipping and returns. But the cliff between Amazon and anywhere else is really quite high.

@manton Zero effort, until you realise you have to wait for the package to be delivered, and then you realise that going to the shops is faster than waiting for a delivery. You also eventually realise that local shops will stock less and less, due to the competition. The Amazon Venus Fly Trap effect.
