Biden should focus his 2024 campaign around banning assault weapons. Keep it simple, nothing else except guns and some basics about the economy. I think most people across parties are ready for it. 🇺🇸

@manton Big issues, certainly, but we can't ignore foreign affairs. We're subsidizing two wars.

@bgeerdes Agreed, that is a big part of the job. But it might not need to be a big part of the campaign message. (A little torn on this, it does play to Biden’s strengths.)

@manton except, people blame Biden for economic problems we’ve been having.

His campaign did try to reframe that narrative over the last month or so with a long series of high profile events, but it didn’t really change things.

The public blames Biden for economic problems, and that means it’s not a strength he can rest a solid campaign on.

@manton It’s already locked in that the social issue he is running on is reproductive rights. It’s a proven winner in many elections since Dobbs, and that decision made it vitally important who the president since it is now a political question. Going back to a social issue where the composition of the Supreme Court matters most is a loser for Democrats until proven otherwise.

His campaign is going to be democracy, abortion, and the economy, in whatever order is most favorable to him.

@manton as far as I can tell, banning “assault weapons” makes as much sense as crypto backdoors. I’d love to see broad, categoric restrictions on gun ownership and possession. Unfortunately, the “cheap, military style weapons only for police” platform doesn’t have the broad support you’d think (outside of privileged zip codes).
