Trying Apple’s new Journal app for the first time after upgrading my phone to iOS 17.2. Not bad, but I don’t think it’s for me. Day One is a better fit. Just text notes without anything clever.

I’m interested to see what Day One does with the other side of the journaling functionality: developer.apple.com/videos/pl…

Most people thought this was the death knell for Day One, but to me, the journaling suggestions API—not the Journal app itself—is the star of the show. I’m really excited to see how Day One makes use of it
(I’m also really interested to see if the API can be used for externally-facing posts. Would love to share some of this to social media and my blog)

nice to know that Day One might not have been entirely Sherlocked

I’m looking forward to giving it a try. I’m pretty confused that there isn’t an iPad version and a Mac version. It does make me feel better about not bringing my apps to every platform if even Apple can’t be bothered with it.

@manton I need my journals to last forever. Zero interest in a proprietary format until I know people who’ve used it for a few years and don’t feel locked in.

my biggest problem with Journal is, that’s iPhone only for me. Give it a web interface or windows app and I’m in again. Until then I’m quite happy with Day One.

@kvangork Agreed. Gotta have an export or backup system of some kind at a minimum.

@ner3y I’ll be surprised if Journal ever comes to the web, although that would be great. It feels a little more like a proof-of-concept to me. Day One is definitely safe.

No way to share entries to other places is a non-starter for me. This also means no data portability if you want to use something else someday, or even back it up on to good ol’ fashioned paper!
