From the blog post for Day One shared journals, they do a great job of explaining why the feature exists and what to use it for. No obvious way to share a journal entry to anyone on the web though, right? I thought after being acquired by Automattic they might do more there.

I think that would crossover to being a blog. I like that DayOne stays true to the original concept of a journal even though it locks you in with its product. "Journal" even shared and viewable to only 30 people gives it a cozy and, more importantly, private vibe.

@manton This looks awesome 😎

I think it looks quite intriguing. By all appearances it would make a great family travel journal, which is something I really would have liked last year when we visited Japan and South Korea. Granted I think we'd want each family member to be on premium for the trip in order to allow multiple photos per entry for everyone.

@birming Agreed. If we ever had something like this in Micro.blog, that would be part of it.

I was expecting Automattic to bring "public share" feature & "blog from Day One" features. I'm not sure about Shared Journals.

@birming I have this option in my writing setup. I Ulysses, which I have setup to be private until I have a biometric unlock, I can always export out to Day One along with publishing to my site. In Drafts 5, I have multiple options between publishing to my site, Day One, and beyond simultaneously. Even in Day One, you can export out to a text editor and publish from there.

humdrum

i havent used day one in ages, but they used to have a Publish feature where you could share entries on the web: www.macstories.net/news/day-...

Manton Reece

@humdrum Ah, thanks for the link! I thought for sure there was something like that, but I couldn't find the feature so I decided I had imagined it. Guess they just removed it.

Manton Reece

@ridwan Right, seems natural to have Day One be another way to get posts into WordPress, and vice versa.

From Matt, Jun 6, 2023:"Day One is launching Shared Journals soon, a social feature so you can have fully end-to-end encrypted shared private journals with friends and family. It’s been the thing I’ve been most excited about since we bought the app."

Now that Matt's most eager feature is out, wonder what's next?

Manton Reece

@jasonmcfadden I had forgotten about that mention by Matt. Also shows how long this feature has been in development if it was "soon" back in June last year.

Also from Matt's blog:"Apple doesn’t care, their priority is getting everyone on the Apple ecosystem."

While that's about shared journals being cross-platform (or not), the sentiment also fits iMessaging with Cooks', "Buy your mom an iPhone" reply.

Apple products: great. Apple company: not so great.

@manton Around the time they launched to v2, before it even had a subscription, they were talking about features for making a web version of a journal. (Maybe that was also a v1 feature, I wasn’t a user at the time)

Munish Pruthi

you could use the invite link, limited to 30. Maybe they will open this up.
