Apple and Google as the bottlenecks for app distribution is what makes the TikTok forced divestiture possible. I wonder if ByteDance has considered rebuilding TikTok as a PWA to skirt the law. Not an ideal experience, especially without US hosting, but video sharing should be fine via the web.

The web app for TikTok is quite robust already. I can upload long form videos, look at analytics, DM, scroll my feed. I wonder if they’ve been planning this for a while.

@manton US: *blocks domain and IPs*

@iChris Cool. Yeah, when I said “rebuild” that was too strong a word. Just refocusing on a first-class web UI.

@brandonscript Ha! Ironically the US would have to have its own “great firewall”… The most we could do is stop AWS and Cloudflare, not really enough.

Marco Maroni

The site could be banned anyway

@manton PWA a tough sell for ordinary users who have no idea what a browser is. My wife an example, she uses computers all day for drug development but has no idea how to use Safari 🙁

Brandon

@manton but it would be NOTHING LIKE CHINA'S at all not at all

Brian Christiansen

this actually the only way I interact with TikTok. I don’t trust them to make an account or download the app. I follow the link in a burner browser, then wipe it.

@briandigital Makes sense!
