Some people downplay the iMessage lock-in, but it’s real for me. Otherwise I’d switch to Android just to mix things up. Instead, I’ll likely drop $1k on a new iPhone this fall, rewarding Apple.

Why wouldn‘t your friends talk to you via Whatsapp or other messengers?
My lock-in are the apps.

I decided to change anyways to see if I’d hate it or miss iMessage. Surprisingly, it hasn’t bothered me at all.

@manton I also have screen time lock-in. I manage my kid’s device usage through the screen time app. They all have iPhones and iPads so I need an iPhone to manage it

@grubz That’s a good point too. Most of my everyday apps are cross-platform subscriptions, so wouldn’t affect me as much.

@effinbirds.com Good to hear!

@trustedsystem.bsky.social I’m mostly thinking of family where we exclusively use iMessage. WhatsApp has never been popular with folks I talk with.

I’ve been using Beeper.com to integrate everything but iMessage. Built on Matrix.org. iMessage > SMS, but Beeper has been much better for decluttering, and being less picky (Signal, WhatsApp, Discord DM, Telegram, X DM)

@manton Indeed. Love taking a photo in Tokyo then iMessage it instantly around the world to my adult children & other family. Sure we could all use WhatsApp or another app, but that’ll never happen.

@manton it’s the biggest thing that tore me away from my android.

but we all thought that about blackberry and nokia phones too. and it was over seemingly overnight.

artificial lock-in + hubris is a potent catalyst for change.
