Joe Crawford blogs about open web themes at XOXO:

During XOXO, Andy Baio said “Every one of you should have a home on the web not controlled by a billionaire.” Cabel Sasser recommended that we all “put up the dang portfolio.” Molly White asked us to think back to “when was the first time you thought the web was magic?”

I’m an advocate of this too, but sadly, not everyone as the luxury to own their web presence, be it from a technical or money wise perspective.

“People are desperate for something better. People hate censorship, shadow-banning, “the algorithm.” Twitter is full of hate speech. The Trust & Safety team was gutted. Bad actors were reinstated in the name of free speech.”

Aren’t these kind of two opposite goals though 😅 more vs. less moderation?

@mackuba.eu Yes, that’s one way to look at it. 🙂 I don’t want to speak for the author… Personally I avoid using the word censorship because it’s usually the wrong way to think about platform moderation.

soaproot

@manton Well, OK, if you ask it that way. So, @seb , has sfba.social made you a billionaire yet? (I mean I guess technically I'm also supposed to ask whether you are a billionaire via other means but for better or worse my mind is just getting distracted by the Fediverse specific aspect of this).

@soaproot @manton LoL. I’m just a middle-aged normal dude with kiddos living in the bay area. I also don’t consider myself owning sfba. The team and I are just doing our best to keep it running for the community.

soaproot

@seb @manton Well that plan is foiled and we'll need to look for another villain. I suppose Gargon hasn't become a billionaire out of this either, which is bad news for the conspiracy-hunting.

(More serious comment: the SFBA team does in fact keep sfba.social running and running well!)

Laurence Warner

i hope you reach $900m one day pal

Manton Reece

@warner Thanks. We are really, really far away from that. 🙂
