Even though @photomatt via #Automattic owns the domain extension, I doubt he would weaponize it against rivals, as that would bring down the wrath of #ICANN (who would strip the domain away).

@darnell @manton There is a required wall between Automattic the registrar (e.g. where you buy a domain from) and Automattic the registry (who runs .blog) per ICANN rules.

The folks that run the registry have their own p2 network, Slack (IIRC), etc.

ICANN, rightfully so, puts in a lot of protections for a TLD available to the public.

@kraft @darnell That’s good there’s a wall! I’m not worried. I have to assume .blog is a good business and no point in jeopardizing that. Also I think there are more places that Automattic and Micro.blog could collaborate instead of being rivals.

@manton @darnell absolutely. Microblogging is something that WordPress/Automattic has a lot of potential/alignment with, but I don't think we've done all that much with it tbh. Jetpack Social added a "social notes" post type but I don't think we've hit a good spot with making it relevant.

We should still grab a coffee or beer sometime soon. Whether it is partnership/something official or just being friendly players, I don't see micro.blog as a rival.
