We’ve got a new Core Int out today. Daniel and I talk about Apple’s Image Playground and SwiftUI.

- image playground - Not great. My gut says Apple ought hold off/delay

  • genmoji - needs minor tweaks, but let it be enough for 18.2. It’s the winner & enough for now.
  • SwiftUI - nightmare for detail oriented folks. Fast & great often. But omg. Hit a wall, it’s over. AppKit/UIKit & mix in is best!

image playground. I think it has some problems. Some folks aren’t going to like how it renders them. They’re going to be mad when friends use their image. I think it has potential to be a PR nightmare for Apple. Genmoji, less so. Images are smaller and less apt to accentuate unflattering details.

I think the folks suggesting Image Playground is lacking use cases are not getting out of their own heads. Honestly, it’s a problem with tech commentary generally. Mostly male tech pundits don’t seem to make an effort to role play other people’s scenarios. I only see folks (Mostly men) trying their best to come up with worst case scenarios that will get Apple into trouble. It’s all cynical.

Useful examples:

  • Small business on mainstreet doing a newsletter or event flyer
  • Teacher in classroom (I’m writing a blog post and had a few ideas so asked a teacher friend who said “Honestly it would be amazing in the classroom! Between adding personal thing for teachers to use but also being able to make more immersive scenarios for like history…” Rest will be in blog post.)
  • Party invites
  • Replacement for clip art in a neighborhood newsletter

I mean, you know, open up the Pages app and look at the templates. Now imagine using Image Playground used by normal people. There’s your use case.

@atlwx.bsky.social Yeah, I’m convinced now of what I should’ve already known: start with AppKit and then mix in SwiftUI for views as needed.
