Day One can no longer import Instagram photos because of an API change:

We regret to inform you that, starting December 4, 2024, Instagram no longer allows apps to import content through the Instagram Basic Display API. This change means that Day One users will no longer be able to connect their Instagram accounts to import photos and posts into their journals.

Related to my short post this morning. Meta just doesn’t care much if they burn developers who invest in their platform.

reminds me of… Twitter. Owning your things seems to be the best thing to do.

@manton They never have. I invested so much time back then around 2010 porting our table booking website to not only have a REST and HTML backend but also FBML . Once done they first removed the possibility to notify your friends and then removed FBML completely.

That was the day I stopped investing my time in to walled gardens with and API. This saved me from so much enshitification in Twitter, App.net, Instagram, Facebook and so on which I would have invested into otherwise.

I kinda shifted away from Instagram and more into Threads for that reason… Well whatever I post gets reposted into Threads and it’s more open since they kinda have ActivityPub working there.

I think I’m going to make one of my New Year challenges be to rehome all my posts over here. (You have a script that does this?)

Then post as much as possible here, Instagram and my 1400 followers be damned… 🤷🏾‍♂️

@starrwulfe I don’t have a script but I have been working on Instagram and Threads photos import, so maybe a full text import is also something we should provide. Good idea.

as long as we’re on the subject, toss in a BlueSky and Mastodon importer too… Just in case. Though I suspect it’s way easier because they have RSS feeds to lock on to.
