In an attempt to turn lemons into lemonade, I’m reviewing our community guidelines to see what we can improve. We can do a better job of highlighting that Micro.blog can be a safe place for the LGBTQ+ community. What I said in the Kickstarter video in 2017 is still true: indie blogs, safe community.

I’ve just reread the community guidelines and they look good to me. Speaking as an (almost) 70 year old lesbian feminist I feel this is a safe and welcoming space where the people I choose to follow are respectful of others. In general people I follow seem to be trying to build a positive community here. Micro.Blog is the home for my blog and I expect it will be for a good long time to come.

Jeremy Baker

@Miraz great :)

There is a reference to a Community Manager in the guidelines, but from what I understand, noone who works at Micro.blog is in that dedicated role. Can you clarify who is currently reviewing the community@micro.blog email address?

Manton Reece

@nsmsn Good catch, I’m fixing that now. The emails go to me right now.

Mark Stoneman

I don’t think the disagreement you’re responding to was about community guidelines. It didn’t even occur on this platform, even if you and the platform are the explicit objects of it.

Manton Reece

@markstoneman That’s true, it wasn’t about the guidelines, but it spiraled into a criticism of Micro.blog specifically and whether we are communicating enough about what we believe in.

Mark Stoneman

One small place to do that: improve this menu and the guidelines on the help page. Maybe improve what can gain visibility here too.

My LGBTQ+ posts show up automatically in the 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈 discover feed, but why not add that feed to the dropdown menu?

(The overall range of topics available on the help page is also rather narrow.)

Manton Reece

@markstoneman It does seem like a good time to change the emoji in that popup! We used to rotate them out every once in a while, but I haven’t done that in a long time.

Adam Tinworth

@markstoneman I think doing that would be a very good idea.

Mark Stoneman

I see you made the change now. (But you missed the + after lgtbq in the dropdown menu, although it is present everywhere else.)
