Another upcoming theme from @Mtt! This looks great. It solves a problem that many people ask about:

In my opinion, longform content should have higher visibility than microposts. Unfortunately, that content is often lost in the constant stream of thoughts we push out. As a remedy, I’m soon to release a Micro.blog theme that prioritizes longform content without losing your microposts.

Chef’s kiss on this exemplary delivery of your message…

Jamie Thingelstad

it would be nice to see longform content (aka posts with a title) also get a little nicer presentation in the micro.blog timeline too. :-)

Miraz Jordan

@jthingelstad Perhaps if the writer were to opt in, an AI summary would be a useful thing to present on the Timeline. Or something that helps writers create better titles that indicate the content of their post.

Mandaris Moore

@Miraz @jthingelstad Hugo does have a .summary element that could be used, but I don't know how much of the timeline is made up of Manton's Magic.

I've been thinking about this request for more content in the timeline and dread the amount of worms that can popup implementing it.

Chris Aldrich

I've been relatively impressed at how some of the mastodon instances display a bold post title, up to 1000 char. w/ a read more link & a featured photo on the mirror of my site into fediverse which also privileges micro posts. Styling on my bookmarkesque posts is also quite nice.

💬 John Philpin

@Miraz @jthingelstad i think 'excerpt' is the wordpress way - never quite understood why we couldn’t have something like that for micro blog .. extra field in long form posts - left empty nothing changes - or write your own - or AI writes a 200 character summary ... in the timeline you get what you get now PLUS the summary just below it.

Seperately would not want to have to shape my blog post title just so it makes sense in the time line.

Miraz Jordan

@JohnPhilpin The thing about shaping the title is that it pops up out of context in other places too, not just the timeline — in a search engine result, or if someone blogs about your post, for example. A title like "Bloomin heck" tells very little in isolation. A title like "Latest policies on school lunches are dangerous" conveys a lot.

Elizabeth

@JohnPhilpin hmm, I like this idea of an “excerpt” also. I think.

Andrea Grandi

the main thing that hold me off to write more in Micro.blog is the fact that to specify a title I'm forced to either write more text first or that I need to save draft, edit post, write title etc....

It's very annoying. I did read your reason somewhere but not everyone writing (and thinking) process is the same.

Thomas Røst Stenerud

@lzbth @JohnPhilpin +1. I think this is by far the one single feature I would request. And that it works more or less the same way in crossposts as well.

Manton Reece

@andreagrandi To be clear, I'm going to add a "show title" option on the web. We have this in the mobile app and Mac app already.

Chris Aldrich

@chrisaldrich incidentally the character count and see more link is dependent on the mastodon server settings. You could always default to showing the whole thing if you chose. Mastodon defaults to 500 while Hometown servers go to 1000.

Anarchy Inc.

I could be wrong but any post regardless of length I make with a Title is truncated and shown as a read more link on mastodon.social. See this short example1 Micro.blog Example2 Mastodon.

Simone

@Miraz this is a good point. I also thought of an AI summary and how that can allow for these long form posts to be included in Discover — and I mean including the generated excerpt in Discover as well!

Simone

is this going to be a “tick once and show from now on” opt in? Also an untick version of course.

Manton Reece

@sim0ne To start with it will match the mobile apps, which don’t remember the preference. If we change that later, I’ll want it to change everywhere.

Rene van Belzen

It would be nice if “more…” expanded the post somewhat in a popover, with an “even more…” if even that runs too long. Not sure if this is even feasible, though.
