Pika Pulse is shutting down:

We’re a small team and we want the bulk of our time and energy to be spent building the best software we can. It’s not possible for us to read everything…

I wondered how they handled it and now we know it was a random selection of posts. I wanted Micro.blog’s Discover to feel like a snapshot of posts from the community, but we really do look at each one. It is hard.

We’re overdue for changes too. There will always be some community aspect to Micro.blog, even if small, because I’m unsatisfied with every other social network.

That’s the thing: the gap between expectations (as per the help docs) and your ability to make good on the promises is vast. For example, there hasn’t been a visible attempt to integrate the additional discover feeds apparently proposed back in 2021. On top of that, the lack of basic hashtags reduces the value of automatic cross-posting. Don’t get me wrong, I like this place, warts and all, but I know these things are a burden for you. Maybe you need to combine two approaches, create a certain number of feeds automatically, and mix personal and digital curation in the primary discover feed.

@markstoneman Thanks. All good feedback.

It figures. I blog about Pika Pulse and other host based discovery feeds on Jan 4th and less than a month later it folds. Story of my life, no sooner do I like something and it shuts down.

I recently suggested that each MB user could get a once per month credit to submit their post for inclusion on the discovery section. Submissions get moderated and accepted (or not). I understand some might be frustrated to get refused, but I tend to think that we only one possible submission per month (or per week), people would be picky in what they want to show up on Discovery.
