Federico Viticci blogging about timeline apps:

My problem with timeline apps is that I struggle to understand their pitch as alternatives to browsing Mastodon and Bluesky (supported by both Tapestry and Reeder) when they don’t support key functionalities of those services such as posting, replying, reposting, or marking items as favorites.

There’s no reason these apps can’t also support creating new posts. Sort of like how the Micro.blog iOS app can post to WordPress. I don’t think apps need to support all social features, though.

I really want to be able to use a single feed to scroll through and comment or like as needed. It would also be great if I could share my timeline status.

Right now I’m scrolling through all the content on Reeder but then I have to go back and to Classic and make as read, then switch to Ivory to update that timeline position.

@manton I don't think any of these apps actually solved the problem of curation. Signing up on multiple feeds, particularly news media, is bound to be a terrible experience. Some produce a ton of entries, some barely any at all.

What I really want is a user-focused app that can curate these for me or provide easily-consumable digests.

for me, not being able to post is more of a feature than a bug. Since I tend to read a lot more than I post. Takes away the temptation to react to everything with more noise that in the scheme of things doesn’t help anyone.

@joec Great point. And the web is just a click away if someone wants to write a short post linking to something they read in one of these apps.

Joe Cieplinski

exactly. It makes posting a more deliberate action. Though I can see why many would want to post from these apps directly, I am happy to pop over to the native micro.blog app to post this, for instance. It’s a check on me to be sure that what I want to say is worth the little extra effort.

With reeder, you can swipe left on the post to hop right to the post in the service’s app (MB, Ivory/Mona). Makes it a bit easier. That’s how I’m replying right now in fact.

It's really interesting to see the different opinions and perspectives on this, yet another illustration of why one size does not in fact fit all. Personally, I'd love a client that would allow me to read across services and that also would have at least the ability to reply. Posting new content would definitely be a nice bonus, but the ability to reply would at least let me stay in the conversation without needing to switch apps. If something like @MonaApp could support Micro.blog timelines, I'd have it all since I could then use Micro.blog to aggregate Fediverse/Bluesky content.

@jmanes Ah, very neat, I did not know Reeder could do this. I may need to give it another look.
