It took me a while to decide to add official support for blog post summaries, but now that I’m committed I’m finding all sorts of little things that should make things better for long-form posts. Hugo already has nice support with .summary
, just need to finish a new editing UI and timeline tweaks.
Summaries as in, initial part of the blog post that gets shown on the blog index page instead of the whole post?

@manton.org Summaries as in, initial part of the blog post that gets shown on the blog index page instead of the whole post?

@mackuba.eu Yes, although it depends on the theme how the index page will use them. I think there’s potential for showing them in more places too, such as the timeline where longer posts have usually been deemphasized.

I’m glad to hear about your efforts in this direction. One other thing that would be helpful is tags, though I have no idea how hard that would be.

@markstoneman Thanks. I’ve resisted tags for posts because I think categories tend to be simpler and more useful for the reader, but maybe it’s time to reevaluate that.

I’d appreciate it. I like categories to be simple, and I use tags for more specific details. If I had both, a category could be War & Society, but tags could lead to World War One, The Civil War, Civil-Military Relations, U.S. Army, and so on. Without tags, I’ve had to grow my categories beyond what I think is useful. – FWIW, I think of categories a little like the table of contents of a book. And tags function like the entries in an index.

One way you could consider emphasizing links and longform on the Micro.blog Timeline is by including the website favicon and making links bold. This way it doesn’t disrupt the timeline with cover pictures while still telling people where the focus of the post is.

@moonmehta Thanks, I’ll experiment with that. I think the favicon might be redundant since we have the profile photo too.

How? I’m not suggesting having favicons only for links to my own longform posts. But for any links. A bit like how bookmark managers show links.

@moonmehta Ah, for sharing other links, yes, that would be a nice improvement. I’m first thinking about your own posts.

@moonmehta By the way, any particular bookmark managers that you’re thinking of that we should draw inspiration from?

Hoping that my blog theme will support this from day one or soon after launch!
