The TikTok-ification of other platforms (Reels, Shorts) is optimizing for user engagement instead of usability. Good luck pausing, rewinding, or sharing one of these clips. At times it’s actually user-hostile.

and they are unable to be nuanced in the short form of those platforms

I hate that. There’s always an option to share but no one can see it unless they create an account and stay logged in

Did you forget Vine existed? That’s the source. On top of that, your buddy Zuckerberg is the behemoth in the room who takes anything he can and immediately beams it into the eyes of billions of people.

TikTok are bad, yes, but you talk about them as if the other agents aren’t even involved, let alone at times even more influential.

Manton Reece

@SimonWoods I do sometimes forget Vine existed! But yes, no argument from me about Zuckerberg.

Manton Reece

@mattdobbins Exactly. We’ve had a common UI for controlling video for years or decades now, seems silly to throw it out.

Manton Reece

@mattdobbins Hmm, I hadn’t considered that. Meta usually doesn’t mind copying other companies. 🙂 I think the UI designers are just winging it, mostly.

Ingmar

@manton Funny that pausing, rewinding and sharing seems to work best on TikTok.

might just be the way I use my devices, but that’s an example, as is the inability to use the default text select/copy/look up/search/etc features built into the Apple system controls. When the text fields are custom and don’t allow those things it really ticks me off. Apple is ALSO guilty of this in their messages app as of the last few years.
