Dave Winer is launching WordLand:

The goal is to bootstrap something new – a social network without all the problems of Twitter et al. Ultimately the limits they impose on writers are unacceptable. I’ve waited for them to fix these problems for 18 years now, and I’ve come to see, amazingly, they don’t see them as problems.

One way to think about WordLand is that it’s a posting front-end to WordPress, with its own RSS feeds outside of WordPress. The feeds have both HTML and Markdown. So you could build platforms (like Micro.blog!) that aggregate user feeds.

Love Dave, so I checked it out. Can't quite tell what it's supposed to be from his posts, and logging in with WP seems to work but results in nothing, so not sure what to report. Though I'll be honest, outside of Mastodon and M.b I'm rather soured on the idea of social media altogether. I think there's ample evidence that it's been far more harmful than helpful.

@tylerknowsnothing I think it's still early days so not everything is plugged in how Dave expects it to be later. I've also soured on social media, more than usual, even Mastodon which I see following some of the missteps of Twitter.

I went on his site only to be prompted to create a WordPress.com account. Thanks but no thanks. I'm not even sure to really understand what he is trying to accomplish.

Indeed. I see the same. That's one of the reasons I left mastodon.social for hear-me.social. It's small, the operator is fantastic, and I get a 50k character limit for when I can actually write, which isn't often for various reasons (i.e., chronic pain, long Covid, tinnitus, etc). That's why I am so fond of M.b in that it neatly straddles both blog and microblog. Though I will admit I'd like to have some form of reaction to posts and replies, like kudos. +1/-1 or 👍/👎 is unnecessarily judgmental, but it would be nice to have a form of "thanks for the effort" or "nice work" kind of reaction.

Sorry... now I'm making this about M.b... 🫢

@tylerknowsnothing I think a buy-me-a-coffee button (or similar) is a nice alternative. Though, as with most things in life, if you love something, no outside encouragement is needed. Sadly, for most on social media written words are mostly performative, its authors barking for attention.
