Things I’ve now learned driving in the two largest cities in America:

  • Los Angeles: You have to run a red light to turn left.
  • New York: You have to double park to do anything.

This matches my experience. My pro tip for driving in NYC: take the train into the city, leave your car behind. The car is rarely a time-saver there.

@manton As a resident of NYC from 1998-2014 and a resident of LA since 2014, I can confirm.

Washington DC: There’s lots of signs and some roads turn one-way at certain times to allow for people getting into/out of DC.
There may inevitably be Some Large Gathering happening so roads can close at random and the National Mall may be a march, protest, festival, or merely hundreds of people out enjoying a nice day. You never know!

I would also say the LA turn left rule applies to the DMV (DC and the Virginia and Maryland suburbs near it.)

@peroty “Some Large Gathering” is a fun way of putting it. 🙂 I’m driving out of DC today… As much as I’d love to see things, also hope to avoid traffic.

@davoh That makes sense. This was a unique trip and I don’t think I’ll ever need to drive in NYC again.
